The facts about the Bryn Mawr Hospital Renovation

The $250 million investment in a new campus master plan positions Bryn Mawr Hospital for its future as a vital community resource that is committed to delivering superior health care effectively and efficiently.


This will be the largest investment and most significant facility improvement in our more than 120 year history.


Post-renovation, the hospital will house all new private patient rooms designed to meet the space and privacy needs of our patients and families, while enhancing their comfort during inpatient stays and recovery from surgery.


The campus master plan includes a new state-of-the-art, 256,000 sq.ft., seven-story Patient Pavilion, a new medical office building and enhancements to the garage on Bryn Mawr Avenue.


The new state-of-the-art 256,000 sq.ft., seven-story Patient Pavilion—offering a new intensive care unit, two medical/surgical telemetry units, all new operating rooms, a 25-bed maternity unit, all new labor and delivery unit, a neonatal intensive care unit—includes renovations to Warden lobby and the registration area.


The project broke ground in May 2016 and will be completed by early 2019.

Frequently asked questions

Here are some of the basic questions that people are asking about the project. We’ll update this list as the project gets started and we field more questions from patients, employees and the community.

What is the timeline for construction?
In the spring of 2016, Bryn Mawr Hospital broke ground on the Patient Pavilion. It is slated for completion in early 2019. Construction of the new medical office building started spring 2016 and is due for completion summer 2017.

Will Bryn Mawr Hospital be adding new beds?
No. The hospital is currently licensed for 319 beds, and there is no anticipated increase in beds.

How will the Bryn Mawr Hospital renovation project be funded?
The investment of more than $250 million in Bryn Mawr Hospital is funded from Bryn Mawr Hospital’s capital and community support. The hospital has saved for this project and is raising funds from the generous community members around the area.

How will the project impact patients during the construction phase?
Bryn Mawr Hospital’s new Patient Pavilion is entirely for the benefit of our patients. During construction, patients will be minimally affected due to the fact that work is carefully staged so as not to disrupt any of the clinical functions.

Will the project be an inconvenience during construction?
We will actively work to assure minimal disruption to patients, employees and the surrounding community. The work will take place on the hospital campus and administration will coordinate with the township to anticipate and mitigate any impact to the community.

Will this project result in any changes to the Hospital’s services?
Bryn Mawr Hospital will continue to provide the same high level of care and scope of services we presently offer. We will continue to evaluate the needs of our communities and evolve our clinical services to best meet these needs.


Parking

Will there be new parking to accompany the new building and does the parking meet the requirements of Lower Merion Township ordinances?
Yes, we have added two levels to the parking garage located on Bryn Mawr Avenue. Parking meets the requirements of the township.


Ambulance access

Is Lindsay Avenue closing or used as a through street?
Lindsay Avenue is closed to pedestrian and vehicular traffic, due to the construction of the new Patient Pavilion. Ambulances now arrive to Bryn Mawr Hospital at the emergency department entrance on Bryn Mawr Avenue.


Landscaping

Will new landscaping and fencing be installed in connection with the expansion project?
We have worked with the township and community we will be installing new landscaping and fencing in appropriate locations along the perimeter.
